The meeting was opened by chairperson Brian at 6.55 pm after a great meal of Manuka Hickory Smoked Chicken with all the trimmings, followed by ice cream. Well done Graham Cifuentes & Red Team. Brian welcomed guests Karen Kolenko & Benji’ as well as Alice Carotti our current exchange student.
Our speaker was our own Ken Cowan whose subject was Armistice Day November the 11th 1918 (now called Remembrance Day). There were five Armistices called to include all nations involved.
WW1 had a great impact on the Australian nation as the population was only approx. 4 million and almost 400,000 individuals enlisted. After the Armistice Colonel John Monash had the problem of repatriation of the surviving Australian armed forces. After repatriation it was believed 60,000 ex-service personnel died within 10 years of mental & physical injuries including Gas. Commonwealth war Graves are maintained in an excellent fashion all over the world to this day.
Ken was thanked by Brian after round of applause and President Rob took over proceedings.
Club speakers:
Robyn arranged four members to attend the allrounder awards. Joan reminded us of all that the next social evening is at Mama Mia’s Ashmore Village on October the 9th 2024.
A hat wearing evening to support mental illness was also in the evening events and Ken Cowan had a cap that he took on a Rotary trip with 30 Rotarians to Germany, Russia, Poland & Estonia. This was covered in an impressive array of badges and was the most impressive.
Deb & Rob are off to Sydney for a club membership meeting shortly. Please answer Deb’s email.
Next meeting is the District Governors visit please attend if possible.
