14 April 2024

Our Rotary year is going past so quickly.  It will soon be changeover and a new team take the lead. Our President Elect Rob Deshon has attended PETS and is getting his team ready to take on their roles after 1st July.  Similarly, our current President and Board are starting to think about theChangeover and their report for the last year.
Last weeks meeting
Notes from Rotary meeting Wednesday night the 3rd of April 2024
Chairman Joan Adams opened the meeting. Joan then introduced President Brian. Brian introduced guests Kathryn Koch and Angie Deshon.

Our first social for the year will be Sunday the 26th of May at the Albert River Winery. There will be a 2 course meal for $44.00.

Our exchange student Yelizabeta Navrotska (Elise) from the Ukraine then spoke.

Elise showed photos of her home country, of her family and their traditions. Elise spoke about the traditions associated with Viburnum (foliage with large dark green leathery leaves) that grew near almost every house. Wreaths of the plant are used in weddings and hung inside and outside the houses.

The War.
The collapse of the kremlin backed Yanukovych Regime pushed the Russian Elite to take direct action in the Ukraine.

It started with the annexation of parts of Ukraine. Crimea was the first target of the attack. This commenced on February the 20th 2014.

A new round of conflict began 2 years ago in 2022. We are fiercely resisting to this day. The Russian-Ukranian war has entered a new acute phase.

Elise’s Uncle Dmitry was taken out of the “O” line to Kherson today (March 18, this year 2024) to rest a little. Uncle Dmitry has no weapons and it was very difficult for him to fight.

Russia is now bombing Ukranian cities and villages killing civilians and at the same time claiming that it is conducting “a special operation for denazification” in Ukraine.

Probably we ourselves were not fully aware of what we were capable of. Hundreds of thousands of people volunteered for the Defence Forces of Ukraine, even if yesterday they knew nothing about military affairs.

Rotary business

Our treasurer Ian Wilson thanked all members for their help with the Easter Raffle. He thanked the ladies (Carol,Elaine,Ros & Heather) especially for the knitted chicks. We believe we raised around $3500.00.

Robyn Schatz spoke about Parker (daughter or granddaughter) and a tour of Hamburg.

President Elect Rob Deshon spoke about District Assembly and the District Conference to be held on the 18th of May in Ballina.

President Brian spoke about the next Sausage Sizzle to be held at Bunnings on the 26th of April.

The Chairman of the District Rotary Youth Exchange Kathryn Koch from Burleigh Heads Rotary Club spoke on current district exchanges and the Orientation Camp in August 2024.

The meeting closed at 7.45 pm

The next meeting will be the 17th of April.
April is Environment month

As People of Action, Rotarians have been shaping the conversation on the environment for years.

Fifty years ago, the first Earth Day was held on 22 April, 1970, launching a wave of action to protect our environment, including the passage of landmark environmental laws in the United States. Other countries soon followed suit. Every year since, the day has been set aside to focus on mobilizing for action to protect our planet.

As people of action, Rotarians have been shaping the conversation on the environment for years, from addressing climate change that threatens entire food systems to fighting pollution that clogs our air and water. Rotarians are well-suited for the challenge. They use their connections to find creative solutions and take action to safeguard our vital resources.

The Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG) assists Rotary clubs, districts and multi-districts in building awareness, inspiring action, and planning service projects that focus on environmental sustainability, awareness of climate change, and actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Clean water, sanitation, and hygiene education are basic necessities for a healthy environment and a productive life.

When people have access to clean water and sanitation, waterborne diseases decrease, children stay healthier and attend school more regularly, and mothers can spend less time carrying water and more time helping their families

World Earth Day - 22nd April
It’s hard to imagine a world where clear skies, clean water, and beautiful greenery are just memories. On Earth Day 2024, we have a choice: act now or lose our planet’s natural beauty. The day is more than just a date; it’s a call to action. We need to put Eco-friendly practices in place and advocate for policies that protect the environment. Now’s the time to join the global movement and make every day Earth Day. Here, we will see the Earth Day 2024 theme, brief history, latest events, and activities.
