AiA report for meeting on 4th September

GOLD TEAM EXCELLED AGAIN
Team Leader Andrew prepared a 5-star meal of Duck L’orange with potato galette, asparagus and broccolini followed by Crème Broulee.
Thank you, Andrew!

Chair Deb Daly opened the meeting and allowed an early announcement from social secretary Marcia reminding of a very special social event happening on October which includes a boat trip from Sanctuary Cove.  More details follow in an email with full menu to be sent out by Secretary Deb.

Our exchange student Alice has chosen membership of Kurrawa Surf Life Saving Club as her community project during her stay.

Deb then introduced President Rob who subsequently introduced guest Andrew who is the co-ordinator of our reading project at Ashmore State School

Rob mentioned request from Next-gen E club seeking educational supplies to fill a container to be sent to Nepal.  Please help with any supplies that you have.

PP Brad then led a discussion on social media as used by our Club and how we as members can best use to particularly promote our Club.  It was essential that members contribute as many stories as possible (short and long) together with photos to show what we are doing.  We tend to hide our light under a bush.

New (ish) member Andrew Svenson did a ‘member behind the badge’ talk describing his life and career so far.  Andrew was born northside Brisbane.  He left school at 15 and commenced an apprenticeship as a chef – a lifelong dream.  He worked in good restaurants both in Queensland and other states.  He finished his apprenticeship and qualified as a chef at the tender age of 19.  The hospitality industry limits social life as you are working whilst others are playing.  At 30 Andrew decided he needed a change and took on a university degree at Griffith University.  As a result of this additional education, he was able to obtain many senior roles as Food and Beverage Manager and General Manager in many large hotels.  In his role he met a variety of people and personalities.
He started his own business doing specialty chocolatesChange and pastries and supplied Qantas and Mercedes Benz for many years until Covid hit.  He still has all of the equipment from this business and will resume it one day, but his main priority now is looking after his parents both of whom are in residential care.

Due to his association with carers and helpers with his parents, Andrew has become aware of the many people in our area who are struggling financially at present.  Some food for thought for a project?

Deb closed the meeting at 7.56

ROTARY AROUND THE WORLD

Colombia

In January, the Rotary Club of Cúcuta-Ciudad de Arboles purchased about $600 of school supplies and delivered 100 sets of notebooks, pencils, pens, erasers, sharpeners, and more to students in the city. It’s about 350 miles northeast of Bogotá. Club members also visited with students in the neighborhood of Las Delicias, says Dora Patricia Lobo, a past president of the club. “The hustle and bustle and joy of these students when they receive their school package warms our souls and encourages us to continue,” Lobo says. More than 1,400 students have benefited since the project began.

OUR KIVA LOANS ARE HELPING THESE PEOPLE.
Meriam's story - Vanuatu
Meriam, 57, is a strong mother to three adult children with one attending university. She is single and lives with her children in an urban community on Efate.

She is a faithful SPBD member with her fourth loan cycle. She currently makes money by sewing stunning clothes.

Meriam began her sewing company five years ago to cover her family's basic domestic needs. Her ambition is to modernize and grow her business.

She presently conducts her sewing business from her family home, but she hopes to relocate to town and to have her own sewing booth. With this, she intends to increase her clothing supplies. Furthermore, she expects to pay her child's school tuition. But she is unable to fulfill her aim due to financial constraints.

She is asking for a loan to buy a new sewing machine, sewing supplies and to pay school fees. She will pay her household expenses and save money from her business gains. With this investment, she is inspired to expand her business and to provide a brighter future for her family.

Thank you for lending to support Meriam !
Jackfruit's story - Kenya

Kenyan schools lack access to affordable capital needed to build classrooms, buy school buses, and enable schools to improve their learning environment.

Jackfruit Finance is a social enterprise providing low-cost schools with affordable loans to increase access to education in Kenya. Jackfruit offers truly affordable pricing by reducing schools' cost of capital and providing a tailored and comprehensive lending product that not only addresses the unique needs of the school and financial stress, but also offers non-monetary advantages like free high classroom design, potable drinking water, discounted school buses and textbooks, and afterschool programs like dance classes.

The company has financed over 240 schools and impacted over 90,000 students, 69% of which are girls.

With a Kiva loan of $100,000, Jackfruit will be able to lend to 32 schools, helping to support an anticipated 10,000 students. This loan will provide an opportunity to learn in a safe, up-to-code, environment and it will also ease the burden of to-and-from school transportation. This is Jackfruit’s first loan through the Kiva Social Enterprise program
