17th May 2024
Another good meeting made even better by us hearing of Joan Adam's life living in a number of countries around the world.  Often our own members make the best speakers.  Everyone was captivated by Joan's wonderful life.

A good meeting
Rotary Club of Ashmore

We are sad to report that Ken Payne, husband of Past President Denise, suffered a fatal Heart Attack on Saturday, the 11th of May. Ken was a member of the Nerang Rotary Club and very welcome supporter of Ashmore Rotary. We shall miss his sharp wit at our social functions.

Report of Meeting 15- 05-2024

Following an excellent meal prepared by Green Team Leader, Ken Cowan, the formal meeting was opened by PP Brad Francis who welcomed members and members’ partners, Tina, Helen, and Ros.

Brad called upon members to recite the Rotary, Four-Way Test.
  • Is it the Truth?
  • Is it fair to all concerned?
  • Will it build good will and better friendships?
  • Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
Brad then asked PDG Heather to light a candle to the memory of Ken.

Denise; words cannot express how saddened we are to learn of your loss of Ken.
Ken was a wonderful Man. He contributed and shared with many members of our club, Ashmore; his own club Nerang and gave years to the District 9640 Youth Exchange Committee.

Denise, we leave you with three words:

Comfort – May you find comfort in loving memories.
Strength – in the support of those who love and care.
Hope – in each new day.

Please accept our sincere condolences and plant this Strelitzia - Bird of Paradise -  in your garden in remembrance of Ken.

Brad introduced guest speaker, Ashmore R.C. Member. Joan Adams. He asked Joan to give the meeting a summary of her life that, he understands, has been “very interesting”.

Born in Liverpool, England in 1947, Joan soon moved with her family to Northern Rhodesia where began a long series of moves over many years to numerous countries, and including adventures, parties and marriages culminating finally – and peacefully – in moving to Australia. In a lifetime that may well have put a strain on many less-resilient individuals, Joan has survived to become one of the Ashmore Rotary Club’s hardest most productive workers. Listening to Joan’s discourse was indeed interesting …. and breathtaking.

President Brian McAllen reverted to more mundane business announcements including:
  • Report on Bunnings Family Night.
  • District Conference in Ballina to be held on 17/18 May.
  • Social luncheon at the Albert River Winery on 26 May.
  • Joint meeting of Ashmore R.C. and local Amnesty International Group on 5 June.
  • Changeover dinner on 19 June
The meeting was closed at 20:15
